Meet the Host

Jeff Valluzzi, your amiable host, is a long time Rock and Roll fanatic. He grew up in a town that was devoid of any music other than Hair Metal. Most of his lifetime has been spent searching for new music and interesting sounds. Really great Rock found him in his awkward teenage years where he (finally) discovered The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, and other "weird" bands like The Cure and The Violent Femmes. That truly was a revelation for young Jeffrey. He now had a hunger for the obscure. "Bands aren't necessarily great just because a large record company distributes their music", Jeff thought. "There are tons of amazing bands that have no money being spent on them. No huge,expensive studios,no ads in ROLLING STONE, no corporate interference regarding their musical output, or cheesy A&R men twisting their arms for a 'hit single'".
The term "Indie Rock" really didn't come into play until the early 90's. Sebadoh really set the scene with their single,"Gimme Indie Rock", giving shouts out to Pussy Galore, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.,and Husker Du. Jeff found solace in their originality and attitude. Bands all over the globe hammered away in basements and garages and if they were persistent enough and truly believed in their Art, their music would somehow find the ears that would meet them halfway.
Some of this wonderful Rock Music did end up on major labels, which wasn't a "sell-out" to your buddy Jeff, but only a validation that really great music wouldn't always be left "underground". Now, the Show plays other bands, from similar genres, but they all share that spirit. Bands from the 70's and 80's are featured as well; they were the pioneers. The Buzzcocks, The Damned, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and the like were all very influential to the bands that formed later. The Nineties were teeming with bands hoping to follow Nirvana into chart-topping success. Many of them wouldn't even come close, but they still have a home here.
The Indie Rock Boom Box plays anything that fits that Independent/ D.I.Y. Rock thing. One song from late Seventies' London can segue into a track from early Nineties' Seattle. If a band is on a major label and they are completely righteous, they get airtime. Jeff will not be a snob. Jeff will not get pissed off at a great band if they signed to a major. Built to Spill and the Flaming Lips have a home here. Who cares if Warner Brothers puts out their music? Jeff doesn't. He'll play that stuff. Bigtime.
